There is the image I start with and the image I end up with. They are never the same.
Memories from the past, both real and imagined, come alive and usually follow another path as I paint, deliberately blurring the contours and features of the image. Painting from life and from photographs,I manipulate images until their strength and presence is revealed.
I primarily work in oil on canvas, but also rely on watercolor, charcoal and ink, both as preparation for a painting, but also in their own right.

Viewers should feel some emotion when they look at the portraits I have created...a question, a thought, a smile...something that makes them linger.
